Concentration Drawings
2024-2025

2024
In the middle of the night at Sloan - Kettering Hospital in New York City where my wife was having an operation, I began a new body of drawings. They were simpler and more direct. It feels like a new beginning. Making them is slow, attentive, and watchful. They feel like the antithesis of my current optical sculptures, and the perfect cousin-medium with which to be working.

There seems to be a purity in these new drawings. The line is more respected and connected. My posture, the grip of the pen, pencil, the touch on the paper all seems relevant to the creation of these newest drawings.

The scale of these drawings and the materials needed have been able to travel with me. So, wherever I am, I can go to work. New developments seem to pop up in different environments. There is an unplanned continuity throughout the series, where experiments become integrated over time.

Color became an important part of these drawings. I've been using pastel pencils and chalk pastels. I take great delight in my usual methods of application: making pastel powder and using a Q-tip, with delightful dexterity, to color sections of the line drawing.
