Flutex Glass Wall Sculptures Redux

In the 1970s I started working with FLUTEX, an industrial pattern glass from the 1930s and 40s, that was used to provide "visual privacy" for shower doors and office partitions. I discovered that the fluted pattern could function as a lenticular screen, optically transforming imagery placed at the 4" focal length behind the flutes.

When viewing my FLUTEX sculpture, each eye sees a different image. Allowing both images to be perceived at once, becomes a form of "seeing meditation." It's a way to quiet the mind, and physically experience seeing. I call it "Being Seeing".

Recently revisiting the FLUTEX sculptures for a retrospective about my career, I was inspired to create a contemporary version. The new patterns are more fluid and colorful, creating an even more dynamic visual experience for the viewer.
